[–]MelbaTotes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hjönki, agent of Asgard

[–]jaulin 93 points94 points  (13 children)

I won't pretend to know what this is, but in Swedish, hjönk (not a word) would be pronounced with a silent h, our j sounds like English y, and the ö is close to the vowel sound of er in English, so something like yernk. That is all.

[–]unarithmetock 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To be fair that’s pretty damn close to an actual goose noise.

[–]Teh1TryHard 2 points3 points  (2 children)

so o w/ an umlaut (ö? probably called something else in swedish, I'd guess) is pronounced the same way it is in german?

[–]TigerishArmer 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Ö is more like the american "uh" isnt it? Like imagine some stupid teenage boy not understanding shit "uuuh?", thats pretty much the ö sound.

(Or ø, as we say in søta bror Norge)

[–]jaulin 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Not in Swedish. I think maybe our ö is more frontal than your ø, but I'm no linguist.

[–]TigerishArmer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Had to google translate ö just to hear the difference. Not too much of a difference, but slight.

I'm obv no linguist myself😂

[–]EruannoPlayStation 47 points48 points  (21 children)

As a Swede, I am tickled by how Americans don’t have a clue how the letters Å, Ä and Ö work and sound :P

[–]seegabego 47 points48 points  (6 children)

we sure don't! but that makes it funny

[–]EruannoPlayStation 8 points9 points  (5 children)

[–]EruannoPlayStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, elderberries, technically. Fish...? How...?

[–]AFanCalledEvan 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I don't think many Americans get the option to study languages that use those letters as their foreign language unless they do so at a college or outside of school, so I'm sure that contributes to it.

[–]StreaksBAMF22 9 points10 points  (2 children)

This. At my high school it was either Spanish, French, or Latin

[–]JarlaxleForPresident 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All we had was Spanish and the teacher was this big old black lady who talked like a preacher.

[–]tytyty5x 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was about to post this

[–]TheDarkSwordsman 673 points674 points  (39 children)

Why is every single goose edit just so high quality?

I know the graphics are simple, but people are actually, like, trying.

[–]LMaxell 325 points326 points  (5 children)

It's marketing, Dave

[–]rainey832 191 points192 points  (17 children)

it's made by the developers as a marketing thing. this is an ad.

[–]noishmael 56 points57 points  (6 children)

Isn’t that against the stickied post’s rules then?

[–]IASWABTBJ 49 points50 points  (5 children)

Yes but people don't seem to care

[–]StatmanIbrahimovic 50 points51 points  (3 children)

Because it's quality content.

[–]IASWABTBJ 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Sure, I agree. As long as people are open about it being advertisements. This thing didn't spawn naturally

[–]ValhallaGo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was hatched.

[–]Mightymushroom1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ads =/= always evil

[–]jayceja 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It could be, but do you have literally any evidence to back that up?
Untitled goose game is was a massive hit and every popular game has a lot of really high quality fanart, combined with the simplistic art style it's definitely reasonable that these are fan creations.

[–]GorgeWashington 33 points34 points  (3 children)

What's the matter Danny.... Never seen marketing before?

[–]TheDarkSwordsman 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Who is Danny, and why do people keep saying that?

[–]Kuro013 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cuz the goose deserves it.

[–]yatsey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vector work is scalable very easily.

[–]-Pelvis- 2 points3 points  (5 children)

This one isn't high quality. It's a 750 x 632 jpeg, with a bunch of compression artifacts visible without zooming. It just looks good because the art style is very simple and clean.

[–]GroenboysSwitch 263 points264 points  (11 children)

[–][deleted] 149 points150 points  (56 children)

[–]ArchDuckyX-Box 91 points92 points  (9 children)

Thor just calls it "hammah".

[–]The_Humble_Frank 64 points65 points  (6 children)

viking pendants have been found with the description hamr x is meaning "this is hammer".

if I recall correctly, Mjölnir just means "crusher."

but the hammer in the myths is so tiny it can only be used with one hand fit and in a pocket, (it is original dismissed as joke weapon by Odin until the smith that made it asserts that it can level mountains and baby could kill a giant with it).

The MCU one is also a sledge instead of a short warhammer.

[–]rawbface 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Warhammer doesn't mean anything to people these days. If it's not 200 lbs with a head the size of a toaster it doesn't look impressive enough for film.

Against plate armor it was your best choice. But a real warhammer just looks like a carpenter's hammer on a broomstick. Not sexy enough for Thor.

[–]Berthole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thor calls it ”the little one”

[–]colbat45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thas ma hammah

[–]Hobomugger 40 points41 points  (43 children)

There are a ton of ways to spell it. Mjolnir, Mjolner, Mjiolner, and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Languages are weird sometimes.

[–]popsicle_of_meat 72 points73 points  (3 children)

Don't forget Meowmeow.

[–]spad3xPC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Darcy would never forget Meowmeow

[–]Mjolnir12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please do forget meowmeow

[–]psgil 32 points33 points  (16 children)

I think the original Norse way to spell it is Mjölnir.

[–]fiendishrabbit 41 points42 points  (11 children)

Mjölnir is the 13th century Old Icelandic version of the spelling. Which is where/when the prose edda was written down by Snorri Sturluson (an icelandic poet&politician).

[–]psgil 11 points12 points  (10 children)

Okay, thanks for letting me know!

[–]Oirek 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Spelling in those days in Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark was... Lack for a better word... Optional.

They spelled things different from time to time so there is no original spelling but the most accepted is, as stated above, mjölnir. (though Mjölner in Swedish as it rolls of the tounge better)

If you want to know more about old norse things you should try googling Gungnir, The spear of Odin or Skidbladnir the ship of Frej pretty interesting stuff

[–]Alis451 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Or for some weird shit, try Naglfar

[–]Cyroxia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Make a boat out of the nails of the dead? Sure fam!

[–]Mjolnir12 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Everyone knows Jörmungandr is where it's at though

[–]Hobomugger 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's the Icelandic spelling. It's the most common and well known, but I'm just a pedantic shit head.

[–]SamTheHexagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think your head is actually made of shit. Please use a more accurate descriptor in future.

[–]3-DMan 4 points5 points  (1 child)

When in doubt, umlaut that shit

[–]GegenscheinZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whën ïn döübt, ümläüt

[–]dnsfwa 7 points8 points  (12 children)

As far as I know, "mjiolnr" is not one of them though

[–]Hobomugger 6 points7 points  (11 children)

It could be. Just start spelling it like that. Can't really argue against it. It's a word that wasn't written in our alphabet (originally runic alphabet and that wasn't really used a whole lot) and is from a long dead language.

Anything can be spelled however you want if you get enough people to go along with it.

[–]JonasHalle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mjølnir in Denmark, but we do recognize that the ø is a newer letter than the origin of the hammer.

[–]RazTheBaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some use an e instead of an i (Mjölner)

[–]semiomni 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Mjølner would be the correct one (Not really, is the Danish one though)

[–]GuytFromWayBack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbf Mjölnir does have an I in it lol.

[–]Spartanfred104 59 points60 points  (2 children)

This fucking goose

[–]Frefallfrom10k 9 points10 points  (1 child)

ahem, he prefers to be called Lord Honkish

[–]Sir_Phil_McKraken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lord Honkington of Honkington Towers

[–][deleted] 145 points146 points  (79 children)

Can someone explain the goose thing? way out of the loop over here.

[–]ironhide_ivan 230 points231 points  (53 children)

It's just a reference to an indie game that recently came out where you play as the goose annoying the local townsfolk. Can't explain the boom in popularity tho, that's also a mystery to me.

[–]kinapuffar 85 points86 points  (2 children)

It's a game where it feels perfectly reasonable being a massive asshole and that's fun. You can't feel bad for the humans when you're a goose hjönk hjönk!

[–]PwnasaurusRawr 87 points88 points  (1 child)

It’s also a very low-risk game in the sense that there’s really no punishment at all for anything you do beyond a minor time loss, so it encourages experimentation and goofing off

[–]mad-lads 64 points65 points  (0 children)

goofing goosing off

FTFY

[–]ColoneISanders 122 points123 points  (13 children)

THANK YOU. This is like the 4th or 5th Goose meme from r/gaming that I've seen hit r/all and was confused as hell.

Who knows why these things become popular memes. I'm just glad to be in the loop now.

[–]Rejukem 75 points76 points  (7 children)

Welcome to the loop!

Now we don't have to put you in the lake.

[–]Frefallfrom10k 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I mean im down for a swim. You bring the Natterdays though.

[–]Kuro013 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Yes but the question is, do you want to be dragged by the goose, all the way to the lake?

[–]PrincetonToss 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Can't explain the boom in popularity tho, that's also a mystery to me.

The central idea of the game is quite novel. Gameplay is pretty fun. The art is very pretty.

Add that all together and you get...a game that reviewers loved and players think is cute.

The game's greatest weakness is its length, but reviewers don't really notice that most of the time.

[–]roboroller 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I think the length is a strength. Any longer and it would have started to feel repetitive and wear out it's welcome. It's perfect the way it is.

[–]ClumsyFleshMannequin 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Idk it kinda of a cute and charming game. Made me laugh a few times.

[–]reParaoh 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I played it all last night, i was guffawing and honking my way straight to hell.

[–]catsandcheetos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I died when my bf knocked the boy down in the puddle by tying his shoes together and then made him wear the wrong glasses. He hid the boy’s real glasses so he never finds them and he’s always confused about his glasses. It’s so hilarious, such a ridiculous game I love it.

[–]kitteez 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Boom in popularity because it launched like 2 weeks ago?

[–]ironhide_ivan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I didn't realize it was that recent! I assumed it was at least a couple of months old.

[–]factoid_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's like a stealth game where you play hide and seek and steal shit, but you're an asshole goose. I think it's pretty magical, honestly, but we'll see if it's actually fun to play for more than 5 minutes.

[–]SwenKa 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Can't explain the boom in popularity tho

Because it is a ton of wholesome fun. Just being an annoying goose. Simple game, simple fun.

I've said for awhile that if someone was able to channel their inner Bob Ross or Fred Rogers in the streaming scene, they'd get huge.

[–]Le_Oken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's wholesome about being annoying?

[–]UristMcRibbon 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It's a pretty nice, inoffensive game the whole family can enjoy. There were also previous memes about normal geese before the game (paticularly Canadian geese), so having the option of being the jerkass goose annoying people is a fun flip on the concept.

[–]RhEEziE 12 points13 points  (1 child)

This whole goose game/meme/thing is top 3 Reddit marketing of all time.

[–]Exyen 58 points59 points  (1 child)

THE GOOSE IS WORTHY

[–]Masta0nion 15 points16 points  (3 children)

How hard is it to type mjolnir into google to see if you spelled it correctly

[–]Heerrnn 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I guess it's more difficult to type it in if you don't know how to spell it

[–]caerphoto 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You don’t need to know how to spell it when Google can usually guess what you mean.

[–]mjy6478 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Fan theory: Thor’s mom confirmed that Thor was still worthy, but Mjolnir was hedging it’s bets by making Cap worthy as well.

[–]AwesomeManatee 6 points7 points  (3 children)

There's a theory that Cap was worthy way back in Age of Ultron (you see Mjolnir wiggle a little when he tries to lift it) and that Cap faked not being worthy either because he didn't want to embarrass Thor or because he had nothing to prove to anyone but himself. Thor actually looks disappointed when Cap doesn't lift it.

[–]Irarhet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, Thor never said anything about dragging the hammer.

[–]p1um5mu991er 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Feel like a morning jog, Thor?

[–]_--_-_-_-_-_-_--_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He needs the exercise.

[–]dmaster1213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically not lifting it up still touching the ground

[–]RageKage56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That goose is not worthy

[–]ido3009 4 points5 points  (2 children)

What is this game? I see it all over but i don’t see anyone playing it

[–]JH_Rockwell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm just imagining Thor awkwardly chasing around the goose like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost chasing the swan in Hot Fuzz.

[–]shortybobert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much unnecessary text

[–]Weedschnitzel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does dragging also count?

[–]sinocarD44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's with the goose thing that's going on?

[–]AbsurdFormula0 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As one that has not played or seen the game and only knowledge of the game is through reddit pics, bloody goose is a kleptomaniac

[–]Luc4_Blight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meme marketing

[–]franklindude 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is this game worth getting?

[–]Actually_a_Patrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand where these goose memes are coming from but I'm really enjoying it.

[–]jumpingbeaner 2 points3 points  (6 children)

alright guys is this advertising campaign super good or is it really an awesome game?

[–]pootinannyBOOSH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's with the goose all of a sudden? I keep seeing it all over out of nowhere

[–]BrytiLaughs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avengers: EndGoose

[–]Italics_RS 5 points6 points  (6 children)

What's with all these goose memes can someone explain?

[–]CallMeJesse124 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The game "untitled goose game" look it up, it's a great game

[–]Warior4356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also an epic exclusive and I am boycotting it until it is off that cancerous platform.

[–]hotnigeriansex 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hammer clearly still on the ground

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Untitled goose is the hero we all deserve.

[–]JamesRiku 22 points23 points  (15 children)

I wish there was a way to filter out any posts about this fucking goose.

[–]Midtown45dw 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Imagine living a life in which this makes you upset 😂

[–]otakuman 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have no idea if all these images are screenshots for the game or just memes about it, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.

[–]anonym0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it does have a pure heart.....pure evil that is.

[–]Jiffletta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that he isn't lifting it.

[–]Hobi_Wan_Kenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's there a sub for Untitled Goose Game memes?

[–]JasonDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ootl?

[–]joeydraper1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well captain America can so meme is invalid.

[–]set_teh_record_str8 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Ok, Ill bite. What is it that you do in this game exactly? So far as I can tell, you just run around stealing things from people. Is that all there is to it?

[–]random1gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been atleast 20 untitled goose game memes this week
